Linking basin-scale connectivity, oceanography and population dynamics for the conservation and management of marine ecosystems ArchiMer
Dubois, Melodie; Rossi, Vincent; Ser-giacomi, Enrico; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Lopez, Cristobal; Hernandez-garcia, Emilio.
Aim Assessing the spatial structure and dynamics of marine populations is still a major challenge in ecology. The need to manage marine resources from ecosystem and large-scale perspectives is recognized, but our partial understanding of oceanic connectivity limits the implementation of globally pertinent conservation planning. Based on a biophysical model for the entire Mediterranean Sea, this study takes an ecosystem approach to connectivity and provides a systematic characterization of broad-scale larval dispersal patterns. It builds on our knowledge of population dynamics and discusses the ecological and management implications. Location The semi-enclosed Mediterranean Sea and its marine ecosystems are used as a case study to investigate broad-scale...

Nickel isotope fractionation during laterite Ni ore smelting and refining: implications for tracing the sources of Ni in smelter-affected soils ArchiMer
Ratie, G.; Quantin, C.; Jouvin, D.; Calmels, D.; Ettler, V.; Sivry, Y.; Cruz Vieira, L.; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Garnier, J..
Nickel isotope ratios were measured in ores, fly ash, slags and FeNi samples from two metallurgical plants located in the Goiás State, Brazil (Barro Alto, Niquelândia). This allowed investigating the mass-dependent fractionation of Ni isotopes during the Ni-laterite ore smelting and refining. Feeding material exhibits a large range of δ60Ni values (from 0.02 ± 0.10 ‰ to 0.20 ± 0.05 ‰, n=7), explained by the diversity of Ni-bearing phases, and the average of δ60Nifeeding materials was found equal to 0.08 ± 0.08‰ (2SD, n=7). Both δ60Ni values of fly ash (δ60Ni = 0.07 ± 0.07‰, n=10) and final FeNi produced (0.05 ± 0.02 ‰, n=2) were not significantly different from the feeding materials ones. These values are consistent with the very high production yield of...

Pb, Zn, Cs, Sc and rare earth elements as tracers of the Loire and Gironde particles on the Biscay shelf (SW France) ArchiMer
Jouanneau, Jm; Weber, O; Grousset, Fe; Thomas, B.
The western Atlantic continental margin of the Bay of Biscay is characterised by a combined macro-tidal and a high energy environment. These conditions are responsible for the essentially sandy sedimentary cover along with well-defined fine deposit zones observed on the shelf. The main continental sources are the Loire, Gironde and Adour Rivers. It is estimated that 2.4 to 2.5 million tons of fine sediments are supplied annually to the ocean from these rivers of the French Atlantic coast. The Gironde and the Loire contribute with 84 % and the Gironde with 60 % of this amount. Previous studies of the distribution of the clay mineral assemblages and of oligo-elements have distinguished two provinces (north and south Biscay areas) according to these riverine...
